The Hare in the Hedgerow
A hand-carved stoneware oven dish, made slowly by hand and designed to bring a little of the wild Sussex countryside to the table.
A running hare weaves through a tangle of flowers and foliage in my original hand-carved design. Each mark is carved individually into the clay, giving the artwork a wonderfully tactile, print-like quality. A delicate beaded rim frames the scene.
Finished in a soft sage green celadon satin glaze, the glaze pools gently within the carving, highlighting the detail and giving the surface subtle variations in colour and depth.
This is a piece made to be both used and treasured. The deep stoneware form is oven proof, so it can travel from oven to table, while its decorative quality makes it beautiful enough to leave on display between uses.
The Hare in the Hedgerow
Where leaves grow wild and flowers entwine,
a hare slips through at closing time.
Past seed and stem, through fading light,
then disappears into the night.
The hedgerow keeps the path he knew,
in leaves of green and drops of dew.
A fleeting thing, both wild and free,
held for a moment here by me.
